We are proud to announce that Melissa Fary has been named the 2024–25 recipient of the Heather Ginden Aviator Award of Excellence! 🎉
Melissa describes the honor as “absolutely incredible and unbelievable,” and those who know her can see why she was chosen. She embodies kindness, positivity, and joy in everything she does—whether leading her department with warmth, mentoring new teachers, cheering on her colleagues, or inspiring her students through creativity and innovation.
From creating over 100 YouTube lessons during the pandemic to organizing spirited community events like A December to Remember, Melissa has consistently gone above and beyond to make learning meaningful and fun. Her impact extends beyond AERO, too—through her work as an adjunct professor, she prepares the next generation of educators to serve children with diverse needs.
Melissa’s journey reflects her belief that every child is defined not by their disability, but by their strengths, interests, and potential. Her leadership, resilience, and joyful spirit are felt across our community every single day.
💛 Please join us in congratulating Melissa on this well-deserved recognition!

📣 Exciting News from AERO!
At last night’s Governing Board meeting, we were proud to officially approve the naming of the gymnasium at the AERO Therapeutic Center as “The Riordan Gym.”
This honor recognizes the extraordinary contributions of the Riordan family, whose leadership, advocacy, and vision made the AERO Therapeutic Center possible.
For more than three decades combined, Dr. Michael Riordan (retired Superintendent of Oak Lawn CHSD 229) and Dr. Daniel Riordan (Superintendent of Reavis HSD 220) dedicated their time and talents as members and officers of the AERO Executive Board. Together, they provided steady leadership, strategic planning, and tireless advocacy to secure the $25 million state grant that brought our state-of-the-art facility to life.
Their service was inspired by the legacy of their father, Dr. James “Jim” Riordan, retired Superintendent of Bremen HSD 228, whose values of exceptional educational leadership continue to guide his family’s work. Naming the gymnasium in their honor ensures that every mention of “The Riordan Gym” commemorates this family’s remarkable commitment to students with disabilities.
The Riordans’ steadfast commitment to AERO students is reflected not only within the walls of the ATC, but also in the countless opportunities the facility creates for learning, growth, and achievement.
We are deeply grateful for their leadership and proud to celebrate their legacy in this lasting way.
💙 Thank you, Riordan family, for all you have done — and continue to do — for AERO students and families.
